BELGIAN BLUES LEEK SEEDS

Allium porrum

ORGANIC

Replacing old favorite Bleu de Solaize in our catalog, this landrace exhibits notable diversity of shank size as well as a broad spectrum of beautiful blues and purples in cold weather. Fairly hardy and disease-resistant. Needs to be further selected by northern gardeners for cold tolerance, but at least some of these will overwinter in snowy winter regions if heavily mulched. Excellent flavor and very impressive girth on some of these.

Start these seeds indoors as early as January and even into late spring in mild climates. Unlike Jaune du Poitou these leeks are best harvested after several frosts, in late autumn or early winter. May be transplanted into the garden as soon as the soil can be worked in spring. In summer these plants seem as green as any other leek, but cold weather sees the leaves become striking shades of violet.

Leeks do best in rich but well-drained soils that receive regular water. Shanks may be blanched or not, but a thick mulch will help maintain soil moisture and help prevent the soil from freezing completely in winter.

Packet contains at least 100 seeds.
