An especially productive selection of the old Comtesse de Chambord extolled by Jane Grigson. Very fine tender haricot vert produced in abundance on precocious dwarf plants. The mature pods contain tiny and tasty white beans that are indeed as small as a grain of rice. Very charming and ideal for small gardens and any small children that might tend them. Really very magical and fun.

The delicate (and usually stringless) fresh green pods make excellent crudités, and we find the dry beans make for a quick and elegant cassoulet. Would perhaps be more widely grown if not for one infuriating drawback: this unique variety is very susceptible to disease in damp conditions, making it a challenge to get a good crop of the dry beans in cool maritime climates or in a particularly wet season. Take care to space generously in hot full sun, and particularly where summer nights can be cool and damp.
