‘MOJITO' TOBACCO SEEDS

Nicotiana alata ‘Mojito'

This is a really great green selection of Nicotiana alata that I like much better than its predecessor, ‘Lime Green'. These plants are tall and strong and bloom all summer. Can grow to just over 4' and makes lovely bouquets. Fully upright rather than sprawling, they are best grown en masse.

Big tubular glowing green flowers perk up in the early morning and evening and will usually remain perky all day in mostly cloudy conditions and as cut flowers indoors. Though the species is scented (see our Jasmine Tobacco), these green blooms are only lightly fragrant to my nose and not worth growing for fragrance alone. Here the draw is color (unique) and form (vertical), both of which are unusual for the species and suitable for highly designed landscapes as well as creative kitchen gardens.

Press these seeds onto the surface of moist soil in 72 cell flats around six weeks before transplanting. Mist generously and cover with plastic to maintain moisture. Kept warm (around 75°F) in bright light the seeds should germinate within a week or so. Thin to one seedling per cell and grow on at warm temperatures in bright light. Harden off carefully before transplanting into warm fertile soil in full sun after all danger of frost has passed. Water frequently until established.

Highly recommended for flower farmers and for front yard cottage gardens. We grew these plants in both unamended Hudson Valley clay and dry neglected Berkshire soils this past year and the performance in clay was far superior. Best with fairly consistent moisture. Amend poor soils with plenty of compost and mulch generously in well-drained soils.
