CHEIRO DO NORTE SEEDS

Capsicum chinense

This wonderful Brazilian pepper is one of the prettiest we've grown. Fruits ripen to a pretty pale peach. Plants are incredibly productive, and produced more pods than we knew what to do with. The wonderful fruity flavor and crunchy texture makes them perfect for fresh use, but they're also lovely in curries and soups, having an aromatic quality similar to that of Trinidad Perfume.

Cheiro do Norte is listed by other North American seedsfolk as being hot, at least 15,000 SHU, but ours had virtually no heat. Not a single hot pepper was encountered on seven plants grown in 2020, one of the hottest summers we've had here in New York. Could different selections have different heat? Sure. Could other sources just be wrong? Absolutely. Even our supplier lists them as having heat similar to a Scotch Bonnet, but this was obviously not the case for us. This variety is not yet widely available or grown in North America, so some confusion is to be expected.

Common to northern and northeastern Brazil, where all “seasoning” peppers are called “pimentas de cheiro”. Traditionally used to flavor bobós. We love these peppers in everything. Julienne for use in summer rolls, and cut crosswise and add generously to Thai curries.

Recommended for adventurous growers that can make use of a good pepper regardless of heat.

Packet contains at least 15 seeds.
