BLAUE MEERBARBE BEAN SEEDS
Phaseolus vulgaris
An incredibly beautiful bean with a name that is bewildering: Blue Goatfish. Makes a spectacular fresh shelling bean for cold salads. The dried beans are a striking cobalt blue and very nice in a glass jar on the kitchen windowsill. Common within the rare bean trade in Europe, where it is often described as being a Turkish variety. More uniform than any of the “blue" beans we have received from American growers. Very unique and even worth eating!
Vines can grow to around 6' but are amenable to growing in virtually any direction: they covered a bunny fence and politely wound their way through the groundcherries and a patch of milkweed. Flowers are a lovely shade of apricot and pods developed an interesting iridescence in direct sun, but the real star is the blue beans. Surprisingly productive in our clay soil, even moreso after it was waterlogged following a flood in late July. Obviously best with ample moisture.
These pole beans should be sown in late spring or early summer, once the soil has warmed and all danger of frost has passed. The seeds will rot in cold soils! Our local bunnies loved these plants and they had no chance until we erected some protection.
Grown by Farmacie Isolde.
Packet contains at least 15 seeds.
