Victory Seeds in Oregon maintains what is possibly the most exhaustive selection of rare tomato seeds in the US, and it is from them that we first acquired the parent stock for our Fiolet seed. They received their seed from Andrey Baranovski in Minsk. The name translates to “Violet Round".

Uniformly round saladette-sized fruits are shades of purple and brown, ripening to burnished red with camo-smudged shoulders. Flesh is firm and meaty with two or three seed cells. Resistant to cracking. Fantastic rich sweet flavor. Plants are incredibly productive and have attractive grey foliage against which the ripe fruit is particularly striking. Just an absolute pleasure to have in the garden.

Avid tomato growers will notice traits in common with both Black Prince and Black Cherry, although we find Fiolet superior on several counts. Perhaps most notable is the texture of Fiolet, which is unusually firm, to the degree that ripe fruits rarely feel ripe at all. They hold for a long time both on and off the plant, and are one of our favorite tomatoes for stuffing and roasting. The texture and uniformity of these fruits makes them easy to prepare and to present in a small casserole or cassolette: slice off their tops, scoop out the gel and replace it with anchovies, ciliegine (tiny mozzarella balls), crushed red pepper and herbs, drizzle with olive oil and roast in a hot oven until bubbling.

Reliable in cool damp maritime climates, but also quite tolerant of dry heat (as proven to us during the summer of 2020). First ripe fruits in 70-75 days. Very productive indeterminate plants.
