ESCAMBIA PURPLE POLE BEAN

Phaseolus vulgaris

This unusual pole bean came to us from Alabama by way of Glenn Drowns at Sandhill Preservation Center in Iowa. The lush twining vines are beautiful and blushed with violet, even as seedlings. An absolute pleasure to have in the garden. Dark pink flowers and long straight purple pods appear for us in August and are tender and delicious when picked young, but develop strings as they mature. The dry beans are a glossy jet black and make great soup.

Truly dual-purpose and great for small gardens. Relatively late to bloom, but pods dry easily enough here in the Northeast. Tolerates diverse growing conditions, including clay soils. Very vigorous and floriferous. Needs a tall sturdy trellis or teepee.

Grown by Farmacie Isolde.

Packet contains at least 30 seeds.
