ZANZIBAR CASTOR BEAN SEEDS

Ricinus communis var. zanzibariensis

Profoundly poisonous but among the easiest of architectural annuals in the north. This variety can reach up to 9' in a single hot summer and features massive starry leaves that can sometimes grow up to 2' across! The “flowers" are bunches of glowing scarlet balls atop tall stems in late summer and autumn, generally borne out of reach. The seeds are the source of deadly ricin and should be kept away from pets and children. At the end of the season the flower stalks should be cut and thrown into the garbage, not burned or composted. Using gloves is advised as contact with the plant can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Though the disclaimers are discouraging to read, this African species has been grown in cottage gardens for centuries and is among the most cherished foliage plants in the far north where tropicals are otherwise thin on the ground.

Start these seeds indoors no sooner than a couple weeks before the last spring frost. Tuck about 1" below the surface of moist soil in deep 4" pots. Cover with plastic to maintain moisture. Kept at around 80°F in bright light the seeds can germinate in just days and will grow very quickly! Keep soil moist and harden off before transplanting into moist soil in full sun once nights are consistently above 50°F.

In the Midwest the seeds can be sown directly into warm sunny soil in June and still grow to impressive proportions by September. Ample moisture is key to the best show. Excellent in combination with Cranberry Hibiscus, another tropical species that can grow to tree-like proportions in just a few months.

Packet contains at least 10 seeds.
