SAGWA CHAMOE SEEDS

Cucumis melo var. makuwa

COMPLETELY SOLD OUT FOR 2024! ORDER DIRECTLY FROM SECOND GENERATION SEEDS HERE!

Traditional Korean “apple melon" selected by Kristyn Leach of Second Generation Seeds. Fairly unknown to American gardeners, these unusual fruits have crisp perfumed flesh with a thin edible rind that makes them easy to eat out of hand, like an apple. Growers of Sakata's Sweet will find similarities here, although this selection is notably earlier for us.

Vining plants may be trellised, although they are one of the most reluctant climbers I've encountered. Harvest fruits for eating when they've just faded from light green to ghostly white. Seriously, this is when to pick them. You must not allow the fruits to blush gold like we have. When past their peak the flesh becomes mealy. These soft fruits are still useful for delicious sorbets and slushy beverages, so don't toss them to the chickens! Seed savers should take care to harvest the fully ripened fruits before they burst, because they will, especially after a hard rain.

Seeds may be sown directly into warm soil after all danger of frost has passed. We prefer to start these indoors, around 3 weeks before the last spring frost. Kept warm and moist in bright light, seeds germinate promptly, usually in a matter of days. Thin to one seedling per pot or cell and grow on at warm room temperature in bright light, fertilizing weekly with dilute fish and seaweed emulsions. Harden off thoroughly before transplanting into warm fertile soil in full sun. Gently tie vines to a trellis, or mulch ground generously and allow to sprawl.

Grown by Farmacie Isolde.

Packet contains at least 15 seeds.
