CREAM OF SASKATCHEWAN WATERMELON SEEDS

Citrullus lanatus

The sound of these watermelons being sliced open is incredible: they are the most crisp watermelons I have ever encountered. The creamy pale flesh is also fragrant and super sweet. Among the best watermelons that can be easily grown in the Northeast. Ideal for gardeners contending with cool or short seasons. Early and reliable and just really neat, because white watermelon!

Said to have been brought to Saskatchewan by Russian immigrants, it is easy to imagine these melons being selected in Siberia. Tolerant of cool temperatures, clay soil, flood and drought, and the shade of the sorghum I grew them beneath. Each vine produced no more than one or two round 6-10lb fruits, but are worth the garden space they will take.

Sow into warm garden soil or start indoors no more than 4 weeks before transplanting. Sow one or two seeds into 2" cells or 3" pots of moist soil kept around 75°F in bright light. Thin to one plant per cell or pot. Keep warm in bright light and fertilize weekly with dilute fish emulsion. Carefully transplant into warm fertile soil without disturbing roots. Mulch heavily and water frequently until established.

Packet contains at least 30 seeds.
