Opalescent Basil
Opalescent Basil
OPALESCENT BASIL
Ocimum basilicum
ORGANIC
Selected by Frank Morton from a marriage of ‘Mrihani' and ‘Opal' basils. Looks very similar to ‘Purple Ruffles' but fragrance and flavor are completely different. According to Morton the taste is “fruity sweet", and leaves impart a bright “cherry-magenta" hue to infused vinegar. We can't wait to make syrups and pickles with this basil!
Large purple leaves are dramatically lobed and savoyed. Both flowers and bracts are purple. Will make a fabulous addition to ornamental borders and cutting gardens. Suitable for containers.
Sow these precious seeds indoors about one month or so before transplanting. Press seeds into moist soil, barely dusting with fine vermiculite and mist generously with warm water. Cover with plastic to maintain moisture and temperature. Kept warm (75°F) and moist in bright light seeds should germinate in a week or so. Uncover germinated seeds promptly. Provide good air circulation. Transplant to individual pots or cells when seedlings have true leaves. Keep seedlings warm in bright light and water sparingly from the bottom. Pinch plants to encourage branching once they have two or three sets of true leaves. Transplant outdoors into sunny garden soil after all danger of frost has passed.
Packet contains at least 50 seeds.
