MARRIED MAN PORK BASIL SEEDS
Ocimum sp.
What a name and what a peculiar basil. Also listed as “Marri’d Man Poke” in some cookbooks. These phrases are painful to Google and we do not recommend doing so if you hope to learn more. Introduced to the seed trade by Peter Borchard who was gifted seeds from a Guyanese gardener. Probably not native to South America but we cannot say for sure and cannot find further credible information as to its provenance.
This basil has an incredible sweet fragrance that is actually reminiscent of some tropical dessert. Spicy and custardy and fruity. Totally unique. Difficult to describe. Apparently used to flavor savory foods including sausage in traditional Guyanese cuisine. We have grown this variety for years now and have done little with the fresh leaves besides rub them and sniff them and marvel.
As with our beloved Sasklavi, the dried leaves have an entirely different culinary quality than that of the fresh leaf. Unique and worth experimenting with.
Reluctant to bloom and produces very few seeds. Perfect for containers and patio gardens. Highly recommended for lovers of scented plants and unusual culinary herbs.
Packet contains at least 50 seeds.
