Aztec Marigold
AZTEC MARIGOLD
Tagetes erecta
The ceremonial use of flowers was intrinsic to Aztec culture, and likely to all precursory and contemporaneous cultures of Mesoamerica. The whole of the genus Tagetes is indigenous to the Americas, and several species graced the gardens and altars of pre-Columbian peoples, but chief among them was the dramatic Tagetes erecta, which is still ubiquitous in Mexico and the defacto flor de muerto.
In contrast to the compact marigolds sold as bedding plants in modern nurseries, this selection will grow to 3' in most gardens, with fully double 3" flowers in shades ranging from lemon yellow to true orange. The flowers are incredibly long lasting in bouquets and garlands. Blooms reliably throughout the season in diverse climates. The flower petals are fragrant and edible, although the potent resinous flavor is not for everyone. The petals also make an easy and excellent dye, made marginally lightfast with an alum mordant.
Start indoors four to six weeks before transplanting after all danger of frost has passed or sow directly into warm sunny soils. Deerproof and drought-tolerant once established. Best with heat and sun, although dappled shade late in the day is fine. Arid regions and seasons see the most beautiful blooms.
One of our absolute favorite companions in the pepper garden. Ideal “end caps" for rows of semi-determinate tomatoes.
Packet contains at least 100 seeds.
